I was so surprised at the selection of maternity basics in the underwear section of my local Penneys store (in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal) yesterday.
The maternity/nursing bras are quite true to size. I got two packs of two – I will wear these now, as there are no wires but they still give quite good support and then after for nursing. The material is a really soft and comfy cotton.
I saw this attached to the bras and really appreciated how clever it is – a little clip-on piece of ribbon to attach to your bra strap – so you will know which side you fed from last! Genius really.. goodbye notebook and pen! A pack of two maternity/nursing bras only cost €12, I remember paying €30 for one in my last pregnancy!
Although the nursing bras are very comfy and soft – you won’t want to be wearing them at night if you do decide to breastfeed.. this is where Sleep Bras come in! Sleep Bras are basically a seamless, soft lycra material with no clips, hooks or adjustable straps. Like a very basic sports bra, with easy access for feeding (wrap across design). A pack of 2 only costs €6.
The seamless Maternity Leggings are amazing – more like heavy footless tights than leggings. They give a really good shape, come right up over bump and hug you nice and tight all over! I got a pair in size S for now and another pair in size M (incase bump gets huge). I will get great wear out of these under little dresses now in the winter months! They were €6.
I got a pack of the Maternity Briefs (under the bump) which have a little more stretch and a looser waistband than normal underwear, instead of going up a size. These also match the maternity bras – which makes me happy! A pack of 3 costs €7. Penneys also had over the bump, spanx style underwear in store!
I got a pair of the Skinny Maternity Jeans (under the bump) in black and navy.. these are nice and fitted on the leg – which I’ve been struggling to find in maternity. I got both in a size 8, there isn’t much support to bump and I do prefer jeans to be over the bump, but they look so good on I gave in! They would have been perfect in the first trimester when my own jeans didn’t fit but I wasn’t quite ready for maternity jeans! These jeans were €15 a pair and I’ll probably be glad of them in the first few weeks after baby arrives as they are like jeggings.
Hope this has helped some of you beautiful mummy-to-be’s!
