It was only going to be a matter of time until a recipe or cake crept onto the blog, so I figured I might as well give you all an idea of the type of baking I might be sharing.
I starting baking in secondary school for Home Economics and anyone in my class could tell you – I wasn’t the most loved student! I still took it all in and enjoyed it.. and got great results – but I would have done better if I had kept quiet a bit more!
After secondary school I didn’t really start baking again until I was pregnant with my daughter, Lilly Rose. (I also started knitting and dyed my hair red – pregnancy does weird things). I decided I wanted to be the type of mammy that could take out a mixing bowl and pull on a frilly apron and enjoy little hands helping me as I baked. I wanted to be able to bake my baby’s first birthday cake.. in fact all her birthday cakes!
So I have included some pictures of Lilly Rose’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd birthday cakes – all baked and decorated by myself! And yes.. there is more than one cake at every birthday – I bake a simple one for her birthday day and then a more decorated one for the party!
As you can see, I started off very plain and simple. The first year was a plain sponge cake with buttercream icing, a few maltesers and chocolate fingers, topped with melted chocolate writing.
The second year, I baked a chocolate biscuit cake and bought coloured royal icing for each colour I needed. I hand cut a Peppa Pig and other bits and pieces.
The third year, I didn’t have much choice on what to bake! It was a minion cake she wanted and a minion cake she got! This time though, I bought all the different coloured dyes that I would need and started to prepare each colour of icing myself.
Slowly but surely, I am progressing!
If it’s something you would like to see more of, let me know! I could do some step by step tutorials for baking or decorating! 😘
